The Hochsteinalm
is one of the last
non-seasonal serviced
alpine pastures of the Salzkammergut
The destination lies
in an enchanting
little valley
on the westside of the
Fahrnaugupfs between
Traunkirchen and Ebensee
The way is short and easy
and you can see summits
of the whole
mountain range Höllengebirge
to the mountain range Totes Gebirge.
The owners of the alpine pasture
look here in about
1000 m above sea-level
with loving care after
many national
and also strange kinds of
animals.
There are
Scottish highland cattle,
galloways, horses,
donkeys, rabbits,
many national and strange
kinds of
goats, sheep
and pigs
and even
alpacas and lamas.
Especially for children
is this a little
paradise on Earth
.. . also during winter
when the forest-road gets cleaned,
it’s an easy walk
and a great toboggan-run.
The shortest way up to the
Hochsteinalm begins in
Traunkirchen/Mühlbachberg
at the barrier on the begin of
the forest road (700 m),
10 minutes by car
from the House Grabler, Altmünster.
From here go up
straight ahead the
old narrow pass and you’ll
reach the area of the
alpine pasture in half an hour
or go along the forest road
- beginning in the opposite direction – what will take you about an hours walk.
A further starting point
for a walk up to the Hochsteinalm
is the inn „Windlegern“
(816 m) on the hill Kollmannsberg
between Traunkirchen and
Neukirchen
(about an hours walk).
If you’d like to make
a round-trip you can go
from the inn „Kreh“ (647 m)
in the valley Langbathtal
in Ebensee or via the romantic path
Falmbachsteig
(take care with children).
Because of the closeness
to your holiday domicile
you can go also by bike to the
area of the Hochsteinalm
directly from the House Grabler.
Written area guides and moving maps are available in our bookshops
and/or can be also borrowed.
