The Dachstein South face
is with it’s height of 1000 m
one of the most imposing
rocks of the Alps
- the climbing up the wall
is recommended exclusively for
extreme-hikersIn addition there was also
built a climbing-rise by
mountain guides, which can
be used also from “normal-hikers”
with somewhat power,
standing power and alpine
experience and with climbing-rise equipmentStarting point
is the parking place at the
Dachstein-Südwand cable-car
- from there it’s about 45 minutes
walking time to the mountain hut
Südwandhütte (1870 m)After a few metres downhill
starts the entry
to the South faceFirst the path leads up
the wall, partly easy climbing,
and comes then to the saddle
in the Schuttkar
beneath the South face
At a significant rock (looks
like a needle) begins the real
climbing path,
which is secured with a
continuous steel rope
(height of the wall about 600 m)After about 5 hours walking time
you’ll reach the end directly
by the hut Dachstein-Warte
(serviced, 2740 m)Climb up the
summit of the Dachstein (2996 m),
one and a half hour walking time,
or walk to the top end
of the Südwand cable-car
(half hour walking time)Last updated 2004-09-28
