climbing tour

or Ramsau im Ennstal, Styria, Austria

Destination: The Dachstein with his lightening glaciers is with his 2996 m the only
three thousand metres high mountain and because of that
the highest summit of the Salzkammergut

Starting points
for the climbing tour
up the Dachstein are the villages
Hallstatt, Obertraun (1 hour by car
from Altmünster) and in Styria
the village Ramsau

The path from Hallstatt leads up
direclty from the valley (530m)
via the Echerntal
the hut Tiergartenhütte (1468 m)
and the hut Wiesberghaus (1872 m)

If you start in Obertraun
take the
Krippenstein-cable car
– both routes lead to the hut
Simony-Hütte (2205 m)

From this hut are
just 200 high metres left. . .

. . .
before you reach (after about 3 km of paths)
the Randkluft on the glacier
Hallstätter Gletscher
at the beginning of the
summit on 2700 m

Till that point the path can
be seen as easy if you keep the
precautionary measures

By the way, this point
can be reached
easier and quicker from
the Styrian side . . .

. . . driving up the toll-road
to the Dachstein-cable car
and drive with it up to the
Hunerkogel (2700 m)
and be therefore directly
in the glacier area

Walk from the Hunerkogel
over the glacier to the
beginning of the summit
(1 hour walking time) -
which should be climbed just by
experienced hikers

Mountain guides
are at your disposa

The climbing up the Dachstein
is really worthwhile
- staying power, slip resistance,
as well as alpine and glacier
experience and the correspondent
equipment are necessary, and
you should have a good head for heigths

Besides the climbing up
the Dachstein-summit there are
many crossings in the Dachstein area,
which make great demands
on condition and
sense of direction
